About
The Lotus Garden, one of Manhattan’s first rooftop community gardens, has thrived on the Upper West Side for more than 40 years. Nestled atop a parking garage, the unique 7,000-square-foot green space features shade trees and flowers; goldfish ponds; dozens of individual garden plots; and seating areas, where neighborhood residents come to relax and enjoy nature. Join several Lotus Garden members to tour this remarkable space. We’ll discuss the garden’s origins and complex construction, which included installing a state-of-the-art drainage system and ensuring the garage below could support the tremendous weight of the plants, a garden shed, and a mountain of topsoil and gravel. Landscape designer Carrie Maher Greenwald and landscape architect Mark Greenwald, who spearheaded the original project, will also be on hand to reflect on the garden’s thoughtful layout, winding paths, and early plant selections, all of which contribute to the beauty of this rare rooftop haven.
The Lotus Garden is a recipient of a 2024 Garden Conservancy Garden Futures Grant.
